Bad Gastein
Waterfall in the Gorge
Portrait
Bad Gastein's hotels are stacked up both walls of a ravine with a two-hundred-metre waterfall falling through the centre, and its radon-rich thermal water was taken by Habsburg emperors and later by half of Europe. The town emptied in the late twentieth century and its grand hotels stood derelict for decades; several have reopened since 2020, and the effect is unusual.
