Hakone
Onsen below Fuji
Portrait
Hakone sits in the caldera of a volcano that last erupted three thousand years ago, and its hot springs served travellers on the Tokaido road between Edo and Kyoto — the checkpoint where the shogunate inspected them is reconstructed. Owakudani still vents sulphur, and eggs boiled in the pools turn black and are said to add seven years to your life.
