Holetown / St James
The Platinum Coast
Portrait
English settlers landed on this beach in 1627 and called the place Jamestown before the name slid into Holetown, which makes it the oldest European foothold on Barbados. Ronald Tree built Sandy Lane above the sand in 1961 and the coral shore took its nickname from the colour; the beach itself stays public to the high-water mark under Barbadian law, however the hotels behind it are priced.
