The Dutch held Recife from 1630 to 1654 and laid out a city on islands connected by bridges, which is why Brazilians call it their Venice and why the oldest synagogue in the Americas stands on Rua do Bom Jesus. Cross to Olinda on the hill for the colonial churches, and come at carnival, when frevo fills the streets from dawn.
