The Quadrado
Portrait
The Quadrado is a grass square laid out by Jesuits in 1586 with a white church at its seaward end, and the fishermen's cottages around it are now shops and restaurants that switch on candles at dusk. Descend to the beaches by the old paths rather than the road, and understand the rule that shaped the place: nothing may be built taller than the church.
