Cascais

King Luís moved his summer residence here in 1870, and the railway that followed made Cascais the court's seaside; during the Second World War neutral Portugal filled it with deposed monarchs, spies and refugees waiting for visas. Take the coast road to Guincho for the Atlantic wind, and the train back to Lisbon in forty minutes along the estuary.
