Plovdiv has been inhabited for around eight thousand years, which makes it older than Athens or Rome, and its Roman stadium for thirty thousand spectators runs beneath the main pedestrian street — a section is visible through glass and the rest is still under the shops. The revival-era houses on the three hills were built by nineteenth-century merchants with painted façades and overhanging upper floors.
