Syracuse was the most powerful Greek city in the west, destroyed an Athenian fleet in 413 BC and held a quarter of a million people; Archimedes was born here and was killed by a Roman soldier during the siege of 212 BC while working on a diagram. The cathedral on Ortigia is a Greek temple of the fifth century BC with the columns still visible in the walls.
