Noto
Baroque After the Earthquake
Portrait
The 1693 earthquake killed much of the population of eastern Sicily, and Noto was rebuilt not on its ruins but on a new site ten kilometres away, laid out at once by architects working in a single style — which is why the whole town is one continuous baroque composition in honey limestone. The cathedral dome collapsed in 1996 and was rebuilt over eleven years.
