The 1895 earthquake destroyed much of Ljubljana, and from the 1920s Jože Plečnik redesigned the city as a single work — the Triple Bridge, the market colonnade, the embankments, the library — in a personal classicism that has no equivalent anywhere. The dragon on the bridge is the city's emblem, and the centre has been closed to cars since 2007.
