San Miguel was declared a national monument in 1926, which froze its architecture, and after 1945 an art school offering places to American veterans on the GI Bill brought a foreign community that never left. The parish church's pink neo-Gothic front was designed in the 1880s by a self-taught local mason working from postcards of European cathedrals.
