The Lecce Stone
Portrait
Lecce stone is soft enough to be worked with a knife and hardens on exposure, which is why the seventeenth-century masons covered the façades here in a density of carving — fruit, beasts, saints, columns wrapped in vines — that has no equivalent in Italian baroque. A Roman amphitheatre sits half-excavated in the main square, the rest still under the town.
