The Cave City
Portrait
The Sassi are houses cut into a limestone ravine and lived in continuously since the Palaeolithic; by the 1950s families shared them with livestock and infant mortality was catastrophic, so the government forcibly rehoused sixteen thousand people and called the district a national disgrace. From the 1980s they were reoccupied, restored and eventually made European Capital of Culture in 2019.
