Nîmes has the best-preserved amphitheatre in the Roman world, built around AD 70 and used continuously — as a fortress, then a village of two thousand people inside it, and now for concerts and bullfights seating twenty thousand. The Maison Carrée, a temple of about AD 2, is the most complete Roman temple anywhere, and denim takes its name from serge de Nîmes.
