Mtskheta was the capital of Iberia for eight centuries and the place where Georgia adopted Christianity in 337, one of the earliest states to do so; the Svetitskhoveli cathedral is said to stand over the robe of Christ, brought here by a Georgian Jew who was in Jerusalem at the crucifixion. The Jvari monastery on the ridge above watches the confluence of the Aragvi and the Kura.
