Arles has an amphitheatre, a theatre and a necropolis from the Roman city, and Van Gogh arrived in 1888 and produced around three hundred works in fifteen months — the yellow house, the night café, the starry night over the Rhône — before cutting his ear and being hospitalised in the building that is now a cultural centre. The Rencontres d'Arles each summer is the largest photography festival in the world.
