Bern

Bern's old town sits in a loop of the Aare and keeps six kilometres of covered arcade — one of the longest such shopping promenades in Europe — along streets whose plan has not changed since the twelfth century. Einstein wrote the special theory of relativity in a flat on Kramgasse while working at the patent office, and the city has kept bears since at least 1513.
