Serdica was Constantine's favourite city — he is said to have called it his Rome — and its excavated streets, basilica and baths lie beneath the modern centre, exposed in an underground complex around the metro. Sofia became Bulgaria's capital in 1879 partly because it sat at the geographic centre of the territory the country then hoped to hold.
