Four channels meet in front of the city where the Mekong crosses the Bassac and the Tonlé Sap, and that last river reverses its flow twice a year — running inland when the Mekong rises, draining out again when it falls. The Khmer Rouge emptied the whole city in three days in April 1975 and a school in the southern districts kept the photographic record of what followed.
