Palaces on Water
Portrait
Mewar was the only major Rajput state that refused Mughal marriage alliances, and when Chittor fell the court moved here in 1559 to a valley where the rulers dammed streams into lakes and built palaces on the islands. The City Palace grew over four centuries and 22 rulers into a single façade of 244 metres along the water.
