Champlain founded Quebec in 1608 at the narrowing of the St Lawrence — the name means where the river narrows — and the walls that survive are the only complete fortifications of a city anywhere in the Americas north of Mexico. The British took it in 1759 in a battle that lasted about fifteen minutes and decided the continent's language.
