Beidaihe

Missionaries and railway engineers built villas here in the 1890s, and since 1954 the Communist Party has held its informal summer conclave in the same resort — for two weeks each August the beach is closed and the politics happen behind hedges. Come outside that window for a Bohai coast of low dunes, seafood shacks and the point where the Great Wall meets the sea at Shanhaiguan.
