The city was laid out on a north–south axis in the fifteenth century so that the emperor sat at its centre facing south, and that axis still runs eight kilometres from the Bell Tower through the Forbidden City to the Temple of Heaven. Walk one hutong lane and one imperial court in the same morning: the contrast between the grey courtyard house and the yellow-tiled hall is the whole political idea of the place.
