Delhi has been founded and abandoned repeatedly — Mehrauli, Tughlaqabad, Shahjahanabad and Lutyens's New Delhi are all still standing within the same municipal boundary. Read it chronologically rather than geographically: a morning at the Qutb Minar, an afternoon in Old Delhi's lanes, and an evening on the imperial boulevards that were laid out to make all of it look inevitable.
