Russia leased the peninsula in 1898 and laid out Dalny on radial boulevards around circular plazas in the Paris manner; Japan took it in 1905 and built the city that stands, and China inherited both. The result is a Chinese port with European squares, tram lines from 1909 still running, and a Japanese-era administrative quarter.
