Vladivostok means ruler of the east, and the railway that reaches it runs 9,289 kilometres from Moscow across seven time zones — the longest continuous rail service in the world, ending at a station with a marker post on the platform. The city was closed to foreigners entirely from 1958 to 1991, and its hills and bridges over the Golden Horn bay are often compared to San Francisco.
