During the Korean War the Busan perimeter was the last unoccupied corner of South Korea, and refugees built the Gamcheon hillside village that is now painted in colours; the Jagalchi fish market, run largely by women since that period, is the country's largest. The city hosts Asia's most important film festival each October.
