Casablanca
Atlantic Art Deco
Portrait
Marshal Lyautey made Casablanca the economic capital in 1912 and brought architects who built an entire city in art deco and Mauresque — a hybrid of European modernism and Moroccan ornament that exists at this scale nowhere else. The Hassan II mosque, finished in 1993, stands partly over the Atlantic with a minaret of two hundred metres.
