Kobe was one of the first ports opened to foreign trade in 1868, and the hillside Kitano district still holds the wooden and brick houses of Western merchants. The 1995 earthquake killed over six thousand people and destroyed much of the port; the reconstruction included leaving a section of the damaged quay untouched as a memorial, which is the most honest thing in the city.
