Portuguese, Dutch and British each held Colombo in turn for the cinnamon, which grew only in Ceylon and was worth more by weight than most cargo afloat; the Dutch canals, the British colonial quarter and the Sea Street Hindu temples all survive from that sequence. Galle Face Green, laid out for horse racing, is where the city walks in the evening.
