Fenghuang was a garrison town on the frontier between Han China and the Miao, guarded by a southern stretch of the Great Wall built in 1554, and its diaojiaolou — houses on wooden stilts — line the Tuo river on both banks. The writer Shen Congwen was born here and set most of his fiction in these hills.
