Giethoorn
Punts & Thatch
Portrait
Giethoorn has no through road in its old centre: peat digging from the thirteenth century left ditches and lakes, and the villagers widened them into canals, crossing on 176 wooden bridges and moving by punt. The name comes from goat horns found in the diggings after a medieval flood, and the village is best reached by canoe and out of season.
