Guangzhou was the only port foreigners could use from 1757 to 1842 under the Canton System, and the trade in tea and silk that ran through thirteen licensed factories here shaped Europe's taste and eventually caused the Opium Wars. The Canton Fair, held twice a year since 1957, is still the largest trade fair in the world.
