Kuala Lumpur means muddy confluence, which is what it was in 1857 when Chinese tin miners founded a camp where two rivers meet — most of the first arrivals died of malaria within a month. The Petronas Towers were the world's tallest from 1998 to 2004, and the city's food is Malay, Chinese and Indian in equal and constant argument.
