The city was renamed in 1976 but Saigon remains in daily use, in the airport code and in the name of the central district. French planners left a cathedral of bricks shipped from Toulouse, an opera house and boulevards; beneath the streets run the Cu Chi tunnels, 250 kilometres of them, dug by hand and now partly widened for visitors.
