Hotan

Nephrite jade washes down the White Jade and Black Jade rivers from the Kunlun mountains, and Hotan has supplied it to Chinese courts for three thousand years — the trade predates the Silk Road and effectively created it. People still wade the riverbeds after floods looking for stones, and the Sunday bazaar sells jade, carpets and silk made by ikat dyeing.
