Nanjing
The Southern Capital
Portrait
Nanjing has been the capital under six dynasties and the Republic, and the Ming wall built from 1366 ran thirty-five kilometres with bricks stamped with the maker's name so that failures could be traced. The city was the site of the 1937 massacre by Japanese forces, in which most estimates place the dead in the hundreds of thousands, and the memorial hall addresses it directly.
