Pingyao's six-kilometre wall of 1370 encloses a street plan unchanged since the Ming, and in 1823 a dye merchant here invented the piaohao — the draft bank, which moved money across the empire on paper rather than in carts. Twenty-two of them followed, and for a century this small town was China's financial centre.
