Xiamen / Gulangyu

Gulangyu was the international settlement of the treaty port, and its thousand colonial villas were filled with pianos by returning overseas Chinese — the island still has more per head than anywhere in the country and bans vehicles entirely. Take the ferry across, walk the lanes without a map, and eat oyster omelette and peanut soup in Xiamen's old quarter afterwards.
