Magellan planted a cross here in 1521 and was killed weeks later on Mactan across the channel; cebu became the first Spanish settlement in Asia and has been the country's second city for five centuries. It works as a hub: basilica del Santo Niño and the market in the morning, then boats to Bohol, Malapascua or the whale sharks of Oslob.
