Hvar
The Lavender Island
Portrait
Hvar Town was a Venetian fleet station, which is why a sixteenth-century arsenal with a theatre above it faces the main square, and the island claims more sunshine hours than anywhere on the Adriatic. Taxi boats run to the Pakleni islands for the water, and the Stari Grad Plain holds the other Hvar — a Greek field system from 384 BC, still farmed on the same lines.
