Island Destinations

An island begins with an arrival — a ferry, a short flight, a boat that stops running at five — and everything downstream is shaped by that: what can be delivered, who stays after the season, how quickly a place fills and empties. Come for the insularity itself, and let the crossing be part of the trip.

An island is not a place surrounded by water. It is a place organised by four consequences of that fact.

The crossing. An island begins at the moment of separation, not on arrival. A ferry, a light aircraft or a causeway imposes a timetable, and the timetable governs everything after it — when the shops receive stock, when the last boat leaves, whether a delay is an inconvenience or an overnight stay.

Scarcity. Land, fresh water, housing, building materials and transport are all finite in a way they are not on a mainland, and the visible character of an island is usually the record of how it managed that. Bermuda's stepped white roofs are a water supply. Hydra's mules are a transport policy.

Season. Islands change more between high season and the rest of the year than anywhere else, because the population that serves the season does not live there in February.

Insularity. A community that cannot easily leave develops its own law, dialect and social order — sometimes for centuries.

Let the crossing be part of the trip.
