White Beach's sand is powdered coral, and by 2018 the sewage load from unregulated building was so bad that the government shut the island entirely for six months and rebuilt the drainage. It reopened with limits on arrivals and construction — proof that overtourism can be reversed, and the reason the water is clear again.
