Rovinj was an island until 1763, when the channel to the mainland was filled, and the town's houses were built to the water's edge with no quay — you step from a doorway into the sea. The bell tower copies Venice's San Marco, the streets are Istrian stone polished by feet, and the surrounding coast is protected forest park.
