Essaouira
The Wind City
Portrait
Sultan Mohammed III hired a French captive, Théodore Cornut, to lay out Essaouira in 1764 on European fortification principles — which is why a Moroccan medina has straight streets and a grid. The trade wind blows almost constantly, which kept the port working, keeps the beach for kitesurfers, and gave the town its name among Moroccans: the wind city.
