Chania
The Venetian Harbour
Portrait
Venice held Crete for four and a half centuries and built the harbour at Chania with arsenals for repairing galleys; the Ottomans added minarets and the lighthouse at the mole's end, which is Egyptian in design and among the oldest standing anywhere. Behind the town the White Mountains rise to 2,450 metres, and the Samaria gorge runs sixteen kilometres to the Libyan Sea.
