Paraty was where Minas Gerais gold left for Lisbon, and its streets were laid with large irregular stones and no pavements so that spring tides could wash through and clean them — the sea still floods the centre at full moon, which residents treat as scheduled maintenance. The town declined when a safer inland route to Rio opened, and nothing was built over it.
