Dresden
Florence on the Elbe
Portrait
The bombing of 13 February 1945 destroyed the centre in a firestorm that killed around twenty-five thousand people, and the Frauenkirche was left as a rubble mound for fifty years as a memorial before being rebuilt from 1994 using thousands of the original blackened stones, which are visible in the façade. The Green Vault holds August the Strong's treasury, one of the richest in Europe.
