Sharjah has around twenty museums — Islamic civilisation, archaeology, calligraphy, natural history — and hosts a book fair that is among the largest in the world, a deliberate contrast with Dubai ten minutes away. Alcohol is prohibited across the emirate, and UNESCO named it Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998.
