Nikolaos Tselementes was born here and his 1910 manual so dominated Greek domestic cooking that his surname became the ordinary word for a cookbook, which no other cook in any language has managed. The island also turns clay: the chickpea stew that bakes overnight in a sealed pot exists because Sifnos made the pot first.
